EazeQuant Human IL-5 ELISA Kit is used to quantitively detect human Interleukin-5 (IL-5) in serum and cell culture supernatant.

IL-5 is a cytokine, mainly produced by specialized immune cells called Th2 cells and mast cells. It is a central player in the life cycle of eosinophils, a type of white blood cell, by promoting their growth, maturation, and activation. IL-5 exerts its effects by binding to the IL-5R receptor, which in turn fuels eosinophil-driven inflammatory responses. High levels of IL-5 are frequently observed in asthma and eosinophilic esophagitis. Because of its critical role in activating and sustaining eosinophils, targeting IL-5 or its receptor has been a successful therapeutic strategy for treating eosinophil-related disorders. The medications to block IL-5 signaling have shown to lower eosinophil counts and ease symptoms for patients suffering from severe asthma and other conditions linked to elevated eosinophils.

In the assay, samples, standards or controls are added to the microplate coated with the primary antibody, and then bind to the immobilized antibody in the microplate wells. Subsequently, the second antibody is introduced to the mixtures as the detector, followed by the addition of a substrate solution that generates signal to be measured. The intensity of this signal correlates to the concentration of human IL-5 in the original specimen.
