Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) is a vital protein that orchestrates angiogenesis, the process of forming new blood vessels. It’s produced by a variety of cells, including endothelial cells, macrophages, and tumor cells. VEGF drives the growth and increases the permeability of blood vessels by attaching to its specific receptors, VEGFR-1 and VEGFR-2. While VEGF is crucial for normal development and wound healing, dysregulated VEGF is a major factor in conditions like cancer, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration. When VEGF is overexpressed, it can trigger pathological angiogenesis, therapies that inhibit VEGF signaling have proven effective in treating various cancers and ocular disorders.

In the assay, samples, standards or controls are added to the microplate coated with the primary antibody, and then bind to the immobilized antibody in the microplate wells. Subsequently, the second antibody is introduced to the mixtures as the detector, followed by the addition of a substrate solution that generates signal to be measured. The intensity of this signal correlates to the concentration of human VEGF-A in the original specimen.
