Nucleic Acid Gel Stain I is the most sensitive fluorescent stain for detecting double- or single-stranded DNA or RNA in electrophoretic gels using standard UV transilluminators. The dye-nucleic acid complexes have excitation maxima at ~495 nm (visible) and ~300 nm (UV), and an emission maximum at ~537 nm.
The stain penetrates thick and high-percentage agarose gels quickly and does not require destaining. It does not interfere with restriction endonucleases, T4 DNA ligase, Taq polymerase, or blotting techniques. The dye can be removed from nucleic acids by ethanol precipitation, leaving pure templates for further analysis.
